Etsy Tackles Holiday Shopping FOLA: Fear of Late Arrival

By: Ina Steiner

Etsy has the antidote for shoppers who are experiencing FOLA (fear of late arrival). Etsy sent an email campaign to attract shoppers who may be growing concerned about delivery delays in the leadup to Christmas by suggesting they shop local.

"Nearby and sure to catch your eye" was the subject line, and inside, underneath links to Gift Cards, Gift Guides, and Holiday Hub, Etsy wrote:

"Still have names to check off your list? Never fear! Shop these foolproof present picks today. Minimize your carbon footprint and maximize your gifting potential by searching for one-of-a-kind local finds." A button labeled "See what's nearby" linked to a section of an Editors' Picks selection of last-minute gift ideas landing page titled, "Support local sellers Shop your local listings."

Preparing to be impressed (or a bit creeped out) by Etsy's ability to geo-target email marketing campaigns, instead it showcased links titled, "Gifts from (state name)." Options included California, Texas, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Illinois.

Clicking through showed search results filtered by state and "Arrives by Dec 24." Each listing shown in the results showed the estimated arrival date.

The email is designed to give shoppers greater confidence to buy holiday gifts online as Christmas grows near, especially for shoppers who experienced late-arriving packages last December or who are hearing about supply chain issues this year.

If you've seen marketplaces like Etsy, eBay, and Amazon target shoppers who are experiencing the fear of late-arriving packages through creative campaigns like this one, let us know what they are and how they impact you as a seller.

Compared to the Pony Express,

Since most items listed on Etsy can be found (from different sellers) all over the web, it makes sense to search off Etsy before giving in to FOLA.  It's funny that Etsy is still putting up the false front that the site is full of unique sellers with unique items.

Etsy doesn't ''tackle'' anything.  But they are skilled in tuning in on the emotions of their targeted shoppers, and pretending to offer help with problems that don't exist.

Okay, so I clicked on the state where I live (not where I'm from), and saw poop emojis, glass pipes, firearm storage, lots of adult beverage humor (specifically about males who over-indulge), and items with a political message representing one point of view.  Yawn.  Easy to find this stuff anywhere locally so why buy it on Etsy?

And, checking the counterfeit reseller shops featured in my blog shipping from Turkey, these sellers promise delivery in 3-8 days to the US.  It's the US sellers whose merch comes from Asia that takes all the time.  Etsy could maybe do something about the many shops who flat out lie about where their items ship from?

Isn't this just another form of search manipulation, not to mention the never ending coddling of buyers?

I honestly don't know how some people get their pants on in the morning without someone advising them on how to do so.    In a real grown up's  world, you know if  you want something delivered before Christmas, you order it a week before you actually need it.

Beware of the power of suggestion--if you suggest that your FOLA buyers shop locally, they just might do that....at the retail shops in their town.

FOLA-LA-LA LA!
